PC Users - Windows 10 Version 1909 will Force Install on December 4
 
This December 4th, Windows upgrades will force install version 1909 for Windows 10. For our supported computers, CALS IT has loaded the Windows 10 2004 upgrade in Software Center so that you can manage this installation at a convenient time (2004 includes 1909). For those of you who are not supported by CALS IT, contact your local IT support for guidance on upgrading. Usually a major version upgrade like this takes 2-3 hours and several reboots and cannot be interrupted.

Mac Users: Do Not Upgrade Your OS to Big Sur! Please wait...
 
For those Macs managed by CALS IT, we have placed a block in our management systems for the Big Sur upgrade. If you are not managed by CALS IT you may be prompted to upgrade. We are currently testing this upgrade to assess the impact to existing hardware and software. We have identified that Crashplan is not yet supported, Cisco VPN is not officially supported, Adobe Creative Cloud is working on updates to support Big Sur, and there could be a major hardware compatibility issue with 2013-14 13" MacBook Pros. So, for now, hold off on this upgrade.

Remote Working: Remember to VPN to campus and reboot weekly!
 
Did you know that your NC State computer needs to check in regularly for it's Windows and Office licensing key verification? Some software applications need to update and check in for licensing, such as SnapGene, CLC Workbench, and others. Make it a habit to initiate VPN at least once a week for a few hours to ensure your machine gets updates and software key license verification to keep running. For SnapGene, use "Full Tunnnel VPN". Don't forget to reboot your computer once a week to make sure updates are applied!

NC State researchers can now use Globus to transfer, share and manage their research data within a single interface. What is Globus? A research data management system, Globus can move huge datasets, up to petabytes, and provide single sign-on authentication so participants at research institutions, universities, national labs, and governmental facilities can easily share data worldwide.

New Research Storage Option Available from OIT
 
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) now offers 2 terabytes (TB) of storage space to every NC State faculty member. This new Individual Share option addresses the need for a more flexible research storage option for data not associated with a specific sponsored research project.

Microsoft licensing required for students, no pays, or retirees who use their personal device to connect to NCSU Windows resources
 
A Microsoft Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Windows E3 license is now required for all students, graduate students, research students or any faculty or staff members who are identified as “no pay” employees, contractors, or retirees who use their PERSONAL device to connect to Windows resources owned by the university. CALS has paid for 100 "named user" licenses this fiscal year.
