Death of an Officer in Training

For some, preparing for war was almost as dangerous as combat. One of the many NC State students, alumni and faculty who died in training was Grover Phonso Jordan of Hertford.

Jordan, 28, died at a U.S. Navy officer’s training camp in Norfolk City, Virginia, on Oct. 9, 1918. He is buried at Bethel Baptist Church.

He is one of 35 men remembered in the NC State Memorial Tower. [The Names in the Belltower.]
