Nash County, established on Dec. 24, 1777, is located about 45 miles northeast of NC State’s campus. The county seat is Nashville and is part of the Rocky Mount Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The county’s most profitable agricultural product is poultry/eggs, while the largest product by acreage is soybeans.

The type of livestock produced most by total number is meat-type chickens.

The county’s largest manufacturer and largest employer is Pfizer, which manufactures pharmaceuticals and employs more than 3,000 people.

The county is home to North Carolina Wesleyan College, a private four-year liberal arts school in Rocky Mount, Nash Community College and a branch of Edgecombe County Community College. Shaw University’s College of Adult and Professional Education program has a satellite campus in Rocky Mount.

Nash County Community College is a partner with NC State in the Community College Collaboration (C3), a dual-admission program that offers alternative pathways to degrees for students who are from low-to-moderate income families and who have demonstrated academic success.

Taylor-Holt Forest

Taylor-Holt Forest, located about 95 miles from main campus, is made of two large tracts totaling 118 acres.

A gift from Oma Taylor in 2007, it is designated as an income-producing agriculture and tree farm that provides educational support for students in NC State’s College of Natural Resources. The forest is primarily planted loblolly pine for pulp and paper production. It also includes six leased acres for organic farming, five acres of sweetgum regeneration and half an acre of upland oaks for wildlife.

The forest currently is the site of a research project involving an active tip-moth control study.

The forest is not accessible to the public, and there are no onsite facilities. Some tracts are leased for agriculture.
