University Dining awarded gold in the Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards

May 4, 2012 (Raleigh, NC) — University Dining at NC State University was awarded Gold in the Loyal E.Horton Dining Awards by the National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) for the Atrium Food Court Renovation. NACUFS annually awards food service organizations for excellence in dining concepts, special events, retail concepts and catering services. Gold is the top honor awarded in each category.

The Atrium Food Court, NC State University’s most popular retail dining facility, was completely renovated from May 2010 to August 2011. The $4.1 million Atrium Food Court Renovation transformed the once crowded, outdated space into a vibrant, well-designed facility that can accommodate patrons faster with a wide variety of fresh options. The facility’s last renovation took place in 1985.

“Since the renovation, on an average day, the Atrium Food Court performs about 7,000 transactions amounting to roughly $35,000 in sales,” said Randy Lait, food service director of University Dining. “We attribute the success to creating food concepts and dynamic menus that will keep students coming back. Of the five concepts within the Atrium, all were branded by University Dining with the exception of the facility’s flagship brand – Chick-fil-A®.”

Representatives from University Dining, Campus Enterprises and other university staff worked with architects and planners from Moser, Mayer & Phoenix Architects and the Baker Group to carefully plan the project.

NC State Students Transform Campus with University Dining

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 18, 2012) – North Carolina State University engineering students are taking used fryer oil from two campus dining facilities and converting it into biodiesel fuel which is then being used in a variety of tractors and other off-road equipment. NC State’s Biofuel Research and Implementation Club (B.R.I.C.) has partnered with University Dining, the N.C. Solar Center and the NC State Dairy to lead the initiative.

“Our goal is to use the oil instead of paying to eliminate the ‘waste product,’ and to fuel NC State’s vehicles,” said Ben Gillespie, a senior in chemical and textile engineering. “We’re starting to look at using solar heat instead of electricity and maybe a waste oil burner to heat our process. We want to be as energy efficient and renewable as possible.”

According to Clark Dining Hall Manager Scott Curtner, University Dining produces almost 1000 gallons of fryer oil a month. The club is able to convert about 200 gallons of that every month into 100% biodiesel fuel at NC State’s biodiesel pilot plant. The rest of the waste fryer oil goes to Piedmont Biofuels. With funding from Student Government and Engineers’ Council, B.R.I.C. hopes to convert more of University Dining’s used cooking oil into fuel that can be used on campus.

The sustainability efforts of B.R.I.C. and University Dining will be displayed on the brickyard Friday, April 20, as part of NC State Earth Day 2012.

RALEIGH, N.C. and MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. (April 18, 2012) – North Carolina State University (NC State) and U.S. Bank have partnered to offer the Wolfpack One Card, a campus identification card that doubles as a prepaid MasterCard® card, to the incoming freshmen class in June 2012. Current students, faculty or staff members can upgrade starting in Fall 2012. As part of the contract, U.S. Bank will also deploy ATMs on campus.

U.S. Bank is a leader in offering multiple banking services to students, faculty and staff on university campuses, including dual-purpose banking and ID cards, but this is the first time that the company has combined the ID with a prepaid card. The card can be used for purchases wherever debit MasterCard cards are accepted.

“This relationship provides a significant upgrade to our existing card program, giving our campus population a convenient card and banking program when combined with MasterCard’s worldwide acceptance,” said Dr. Dan Adams, associate vice chancellor for Campus Enterprises at NC State.

“Our partnership with NC State offers students and staff of this nationally-recognized university the convenience and security of having a single card that operates as their campus ID and a card they can use to pay for purchases,” said Kevin Morrison, senior vice president at U.S. Bank. “With U.S. Bank’s prepaid MasterCard functionality, approximately 34,000 students and 8,000 staff members now have the ability to receive a direct deposit from their employer, the financial aid office or their parents and to spend those funds on or off-campus. They also have the benefit of U.S. Bank’s online tools so they can easily stay informed and in control of their finances.”

The new Wolfpack One Card continues to provide on-campus functionality, including meal plans, the AllCampus debit account and door or parking gate access, to name a few.

The Wolfpack One Card is free for new students and $10 for current students, faculty or staff members who wish to get the new card. The card has no enrollment or monthly fees, and no minimum balance required to keep the account active. U.S. Bank offers email and text alerts to keep cardholders informed about account activity – such as ATM withdrawals, processed deposits or low balances – and access to a secure website (online or via their mobile phone) to view account balances, check transactions and make changes to the account anytime.

Parents, an employer, or the university financial aid office can deposit funds electronically, as can any other Wolfpack One Cardholder. (Students electing to receive funds from multiple sources are required to have a Deluxe account, which is free of charge.) Cardholders can withdraw money for free at merchants where debit MasterCard cards are accepted and at the 23,000 U.S. Bank or MoneyPass-branded ATMs.

RALEIGH, NC (April 18, 2012) – The NC State AllCampus Card office — and its ID card — have been renamed Wolfpack One, it was announced today by Dr. Dan Adams, associate vice chancellor for Campus Enterprises. The name change was precipitated by a new relationship with U.S. Bank that will enable two debit account programs to be accessible from the card, among other features, one being the AllCampus Network.

“We want to make the many benefits of the card to be as clear as possible,” said Adams. “Giving the card and office a unique name independent of our AllCampus debit account program will allow the two debit accounts – AllCampus and U.S. Bank Debit MasterCard – to reside under the Wolfpack One Card umbrella. It also gives us an opportunity to create a name that is uniquely NC State.”

The Wolfpack One Card Office is located in the West Dunn Building. It will move to Talley Student Center in June 2012. For more information about the Wolfpack One Card Office, visit onecard.ncsu.edu

This blog is a little different than our normal updates. It is a little more technical in nature. We thought that with some of the unique aspects of the project and NC State’s strong engineering programs, there was an opportunity to go a little deeper with an update. We hope you enjoy and let us know what you think of these types of posts. Special thanks to our Construction Manager for their assistance with this post.

This week, RodgersRussell Dayeco, the Construction Manager for the Talley project, installed a support beam. This beam, which weighs over six tons, will be used to temporarily support the northeast corner of the existing Talley to facilitate the excavation of the new 1st floor that will eventually house the new Bookstore and main kitchen for University Dining. The below drawing shows the northeast corner of existing Talley and the columns discussed.

If you have been to Talley lately you’ll notice that we’ve chipped the concrete encasement around two of the existing steel columns (top and bottom columns in the drawing above) to facilitate the welding of the temporary column and cantilevered beam per the design. The column will attach to a new concrete footing that is being supported by four micropiles (center column above). Micropiles are made of steel sleeves that are filled with concrete and extend almost 50 feet into the ground. The below sketch shows a different view of the work and step 1, prepping the columns, installing the beam, column, micropiles, pilecap and brace.

Here is a picture of the two end columns prepped and the pile cap in the center.

Here is a picture of the beam, center column with cover plates and brace in place as illustrated in the sketches. The concrete pads in the foreground are for the new temporary exit stairs.

This work will remain in place until excavation of the new basement, installation of new lower foundation and new concrete pier extension is installed in early September. The sketch below shows step 2, excavating around the column and removal of the piles, cap and part of the existing column. In the coming weeks this process with start with the horizontal cut of the column.

Finally as mentioned above, step 3 involves the installation of the column pedestal and column extension as illustrated in the sketch below.
